Why here

Rural veterans fall through the gap between a shelter bed and a lease, and Hyde County has neither in any number.

  • The county has almost no rental stock

    A veteran leaving a hospital, a marriage or a jail cell in Hyde County is not choosing between apartments. Often there is nothing to choose from at all.

  • Services are an hour away

    Care that exists in Greenville or Washington might as well not exist without a working vehicle. Housing has to sit near the help, or the help does not happen.

  • Small numbers get overlooked

    A county this size never generates a headline-sized need, so it rarely attracts a headline-sized programme. Six to twelve units is the right size here.

The plan

Deliberately modest, deliberately durable, and built to fit a funding programme that already exists rather than one we wish existed.

  1. Secure the land

    A donated or low-cost parcel with utilities within reach. Donated land also counts toward the match a state application requires.

  2. Build in containers

    ISO containers converted to permanent micro-units: quick to weather-in, hurricane-sensible on the coast, and cheaper per unit than stick-built at this scale.

  3. Apply through the state

    North Carolina’s Housing Finance Agency runs a Supportive Housing Development Program with a dedicated veterans set-aside. That is the route.

  4. Pair housing with services

    Units alone do not hold anyone. Support is delivered with local partners and the county Veterans Service Office, not invented from scratch.

Where this actually stands. Nothing is built and nothing is funded. Amparo Homes is at the pre-application stage for the 2027 state funding cycle. We are not currently accepting residents, applications or donations, and we make no claim of any affiliation with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This page exists so the people who can help can find it.

Who we need to hear from

A project this size is decided by a handful of conversations. If you are one of these, you are the reason this page exists.

  • Landowners

    A buildable parcel in or near Hyde County, donated or sold below market. This is the single biggest unlock, and it strengthens the application directly.

  • Established nonprofits

    Eastern-NC organisations with a track record housing this population, open to a co-applicant role. Experience is a threshold requirement, not a nice-to-have.

  • County and state officials

    Certain funding streams can only be applied for by the county itself. Sponsorship conversations start early or they do not happen.

  • Builders and trades

    Container conversion, site work, septic and utilities on the coastal plain — especially anyone who has permitted this kind of build in eastern NC before.

  • Veterans and families

    If you have been through this in a rural county, what you know is worth more than another projection. Tell us what would have actually helped.

  • Grant writers

    State applications live and die on threshold documents. If this is your field, an hour of your read is worth a month of ours.
